COHEAT on Track

COHEAT is on track to deliver large-scale green heating investments in Southern Denmark. Seven municipalities, home to nearly 400,000 people, have already committed over DKK 240 million to district heating, termonet and energy renovations — surpassing initial targets. With strong citizen involvement, regional cooperation, and support from banks and utilities, the project is laying the groundwork for a fair, low-carbon heating transition and pioneering solutions that can inspire the rest of Europe.

Green Housing Days in Nyborg

How do you motivate homeowners to renovate their houses for energy efficiency? In Nyborg, the answer was a local and practical approach: Green Housing Days. Developed under the COHEAT project, the initiative combined personal outreach, local cooperation, and hands-on demonstrations to show residents how to get started. More than 2,700 homeowners with low energy labels were invited, and events brought together banks, craftsmen, and real-estate experts—giving people a full picture of both technical solutions and financing options.

Green Heating for the Villages

In Sønderborg, COHEAT has initiated a new partnership — Sønderborg Lokalvarme — bringing the municipality, local district heating companies, and ProjectZero together to explore green heating for villages. Through citizen meetings and technical screenings, the project is assessing whether collective solutions like local district heating can replace individual heat pumps. With strong local engagement and council support, the first results are expected in 2025, offering valuable lessons for Denmark’s green transition.

From Village to Legislation

Termonet is an innovative, decentralised heating solution with potential to serve villages and sparsely populated areas with sustainable heat where conventional district heating is not cost-effective. In 2023–2024, the COHEAT project worked to have termonet recognised under the Danish Heating Supply Act (Varmeforsyningsloven), so that municipalities could issue guarantees and thereby secure financing.

Banks as Partners in the Energy Transition

Through local collaboration platforms, COHEAT brought together municipalities, utilities, citizen groups, and banks. These partnerships improved alignment between municipal energy planning, district heating development, citizen engagement, and financial facilitation, resulting in a more coherent and coordinated approach to local energy and renovation strategies.
